Yagnya.. the homage

When works are done for any other purpose but performance of duty- addiction occurs, and man gets addicted. Hence one should perform without addiction with the sole purpose of performance of one’s duty.

This shloka of geeta says:

Performing one’s duty is performing worship (yagnya). Doing one’s job, business, teaching etc as a duty is also worship as per geeta.

Every thing which is done for the sake of others is called yagnya/worship as per geeta. The person who can perform only for others soon gets over addiction to results.

A sage should never perform for own pleasure, happiness, pride or glory. These are counted as addiction, Geeta doesnot forbids performance, it asks to shun performing with desire.

Performance of our duty with desire of own happiness, fame, prosperity or luxury binds us to life or karma or rebirth.

  1. “"A Jivanmukta is free from desires, longings, mine-ness, I-ness, attachment and fear. He is satisfied in his own Self. He is indifferent amidst sensual pleasures. He is not elated by getting desirable objects. He has a poised mind at all times and under all conditions. He has perfect control over his mind and senses. He lives in Brahman. He is centred in his own Self. He is dead to the sensual world” Chapter II (55 to 57).

This is from Swami Sivananda's book on Geeta.

  3. He was a great soul, Swami Sivananda. He has inspired countless people towards truth and has also written innumerable books on the subject.

As I was instrumental in your updating the blog, I had to look the subject up.

That quote was meant to tell you that I was doing my bit.

  5. Dear Trisha,

You are very reflective person even without reading spiritual stuff. So it is natural that you prefer lighter stuff to read.

Bengal has produced giants in all fields including the spiritual. It is blessed by the birth of Shree Ramakrishna Paramahansa( he realized god through all the existing methods , no one has done it like that. He is the absolute master as far as the modern age is concerned) Lahiri Mahashay, Vivekananda etc. So if Swami Sivananda came from there I would not wonder.

May I suggest something dear Trisha, download some other versions of the Geeta also, if you can find the time. It would be nice to have different perspectives on the sloka's.

  7. Take your poems for example. They are always very reflective, that is, thoughtful and serious in content. Even when you picture nature in its beauty the images have more thought content in them than emotional content.

And you have said that most of them are written in under five minute’s time. Naturally others would take a longer time to do that, because they would need to get their ideas in their proper order first and think about the way to bring them out.

But to you it seems very easy to do the opposite. This is so because you have had them already worked out in your mind in some form and stored it there in an almost ready form to come out. This is the result of either consciously thinking them out before hand or doing it so on the unconscious level.

To such a person lighter stuff might be naturally alluring. Because it is a kind of balancing act our minds perform. You are a spiritual person in essence so you become impelled to nourish the lighter side of life to obtain harmony in your nature.

Or this is what I think.

  8. dearest sam,
may be you are right, as i am usually serious i think i read (or listen to) light things to relax myself..

i rarely think before writing.. i just sit down and write.. whatever it is, story, poem.. or my picture quotes.

it comes from inside and just spills out... all credit goes to God :)
